Back in (blog-) business and back in sync! That’s what I wanted to be for a long time and what I try to be right now! After “years” of silence finally a new blog entry. I’m a bit sorry, but honestly: we worked hard! But no more excuses … here we go:
For a long time I talked to my friend Nicolas Chaix aka I-Cube about the good old “sync” business. It’s all about syncing the machines (mainly Roland X0X) and just start to jam and see what’s coming out of the boxes. No more sitting in front of a computer screen for hours. No more backache! Just more fun: running around in the studio. Pulling and plugging cables, playing some real keyboards, turning on the arpeggiator (in sync!), being annoyed if some connection failed, struggeling with some analog equipment that’s not in tune, many many technical compromises, etc etc. But at the end: a fantastic sound straight out of the box, very human, very intuative and very spontaneous!

Hello.
After great response for the first article in this series (thanks to twitter …) here comes part 2. And this time Monsieur Cyril Etienne aka DJ Deep who I met a few weeks ago at the ADE shows us some of his cheapest secrets. He mentioned that he would rather ask DJ Gregory for this but I think it’s quite interesting what he sent me as it’s a bit more DJ orientated … So here we go:
5 STUDIO CHEAPOS BY DJ DEEP

On my daily “waste of time internet search” I found this really interesting software from “Gleetchplug“. They have rebuild a nearly complete studio environment from the 50ies as a software. It’s called “Berna” and the video they posted on their site speaks for itself … and the price (around 10 Euros only) should prevent nobody to buy and try it! You got virtual oscillators, delays, tapes, mixers, noise generators etc. Looks like fun and (if it sounds good) it could be a very creative tool.

Hey everyone.
I’d like to start a little series here for all the producers out there who might be interested in the little helpers that some friends and I use for the daily productions in our studios. You might expect really expensive preamps or heavy rare to get monster synths. But we’re talking about the real bargains! For example a russian drum machine that you got for 80 Euros on a flea market. Or a delay that sounds so strange and unexpected that you use it more often than your top notch 2000 Euros multi effects processor? I’m often surprised how cheap it could be to get unique sounding tools.

Oh my god (I’m not used to say that but in this case …): I NEED THIS ITEM!!! A fully portable turntable. Just what you need if you bought some new stuff at THE local record store and want to check it again before you gonna play it the night. You can even digitalize it immediatelly (if you really need this …).

Freaks and their selfmade instruments … a never ending story. But often very interesting! Like in this case. At the “New Instruments Battle” a guy named Skot Wiedmann (no, he is not related to me!) won with his really obscure synthesizer: a modular synth connected through some sort of neural network. The controllers for this seems to be like two touch sensitive pads plus two endless wheels.

Can’t believe this. Just found that video on Sonic State … A guy can play real drum samples just by hitting himself in front of some microphones! It must be a joke! I already heard about the Drumagog-Plugin but that literally beats everything.
That’s definitely the stuff we need for the next A Critical Mass gig (in Paris, by the way, Feb. 13th). Imagine Kristian beating Dix and it makes a drumsound! Or Henrik shaking his head and a maracas sound will come through the speakers … crazy world, guys.

Well, like every year around this time musical nerds are watching the webnews regarding the stuff been presented at the NAMM Show in Anaheim. And as every year, all of us are hoping for the even more achievable, more practical, bigger and better sounding (ultra fat, subtile but with some dirt for sure), incredible looking (vintage but modern) tool that should make the music so much better, automatically, you won’t believe.
