Apres Crepuscule

A lot of things were possible and borders had been teared down. The belgian label ” Les Disques du Crepuscule ” was at the forefront of the interface between music and art. Benoit Hennebert the famous illustrator was responsible the visual appearance and Michel Duval and Annick Honore for the artistic programation. Lately we travelled to Duesseldorf to see the big Sonic Youth exhibition. On the next day we went to cologne to visit a couple of galleries and only by accident we passed by the “Koelnischer Kunstverein”. From outside we could see the logo from the label so we went in and actually we dicovered one of the best music related exhibitions we have ever seen.

The exhibition was called “Apres Crepuscule-Na Schemering-After Twilight-Nach Daemmerung ” and had been curated by Oliver Tepel a music journalist and longtime collector from cologne. As i am a big fan of a lot of their records it was like walking through paradise. Visualwise Hennebert and his team were heavily influenced by the Modernity. In the show they point out the connection by opposing the originals to the graphic works from the label. Some great artists like Lucy MvKenzie,Hanna Schwarz,Lawrence Weiner and many more contributed some works dedicated to the labelhistory.

What i liked about the releasepolicy is that everything was possible from experimental, classical and minimal stuff to new wave or exotic pop music. The company also was called Factory Benelux so they did a lot of collaborations with the legendary mancunian Label. All together it had been a great afternoon in cologne and we still wait for a catalogue of that exhibition. For everybody who doesnt know anything from them; you should check out their first compilation they released in 1980 called “From Brussels with Love” which had been rereleased lately.

Here you can read and find more information about the whole show.
